Trev wrote: Mon Jul 10, 2023 9:19 pm Thanks Les and thanks all, having waited so long to get a decent distance race again I am pretty chuffed with that result although it is bitter sweet as I still have some good birds missing. As well as a great club and fed result it looks we should get pretty decent combine places too with Martin Slade currently sitting in 15th and me in 23rd.
I have had two more home today, both birds bred by our friend and late Worthing and District H.S club Secretary Roy Olliver. The first is a 3 year old hen, she is skin and bones and has a few rump feathers missing but seems in good spirits !! The other is a 3 year cock, I've not handled him yet as he has only just turned up but he has retaken possession of his nest box so can't be too bad lol 😉
Hopefully a few more will work back once they've rested up a bit.
As always there are some strange reports from races like this, one of our members had one of his entries reported on a fishing boat 35miles off the coast from Perth yesterday while other Fed members have already had birds reported from North of Perth down to the West Midlands !! Now considering the conditions that itself isn't surprising but what is, is that some birds always seem to make it through. Now is it the race birds or the clever birds that make it 🤔🤔 Are the birds that made it yesterday those that packed up early Saturday so were able to get up and go again early next day whereas those that kept going until nightfall were too worn out to do so 🤔🤔 the beauty of this sport is that we will never know 😉😁
Well done anyway to all those in the result and that have birds back, hopefully more will continue to work in over the next few days 🤞🤞
Trev i did say that the weather in the West midlands was bad maybe that is why some dropped here and some may just have missed the rain as you say things like that we never know, but huge congratulations and I hope your missing ones return, I also agree what you say about clocks if a bird does it's task it should get the recognition it deserves
I do agree with that and if mine was timed after other birds had arrived but not been timed I would say mine has beaten them. But in Les’s defence I know he doesn’t drive and has a difficult trek to get to his club so can fully understand why he didn’t clock it.
That wasn't aimed at Les or anyone else in particular was just a general comment of what I think

Trev,I'm sure our two were cooing together on some window ledge. John Bonwick had a bird reported on the day of lib in Leeds after 9 hrs of flying. The amazing thing about this event, was the reporter fed and watered the bird and released it 30 mins later. That bird won 2nd in my club and 8th fed! That was a 210 mile single toss. :D

That pigeon certainly showed some determination to get home. Well done to the fancier for feeding and watering it before letting it continue on its way. Probably had a better night having had a feed and a decent drink than those that didn’t.

Well done John and well done to the fancier who had the sense to report the bird and help it on it's way so promptly, 2nd club 8th Fed is great result.
Now as I said in a post I made in the Mark Gilbert Thread, is it the smartest or fastest birds that win these races ?? If Mark's Barcelona winner hadn't reached home after 15+hrs flying at an average of 40mph would it have had the courage and strength to get up and go again the next morning 🤔🤔
In my opinion any bird that makes it home from these races deserves its perch but to me in building a good distance team you need those clever birds that on a tough day will stop for a break and probably stop well before dark as these are likely to be the birds who are up early next day as well as those determined faster birds who will take their chances on making it home on the day !!

With that in mind I was pleased to my 6th bird make it home this evening, she is very thin but otherwise in good spirits. She is the Daughter of my bird who was 2nd club, she is a 2020 Grizzle who as well as the Crammond lines has Des Coulter blood and Andy's original Faroes blood in her veins. As most of my birds home are cock birds she will be in my breeding programme for next year, improvement has to start somewhere 👍😁

This is the official Federation result.
We are still waiting on the combine result but that could take several weeks.

Well done Trev being 5th and 14th fed. A great result. Also well done to Les getting 13th fed. A good result for both of you.
