This morning I decided to give my youngsters their first training toss. My youngsters are now between 12 & 14 weeks old. The first young bird is the weekend after next. I took all 23 youngsters 9 miles. The weather was broken cloud with a fresh SW headwind. As I said in a previous post I don’t leave the birds on the ground before releasing. I arrived at the Gillingham & Shaftesbury show ground at 7am. I let them setting in the car before putting the baskets down and opened the fronts. The youngsters came out quickly grouped together and set off in the direction of home. When I arrived home there was no sign of them. After 45 minutes I was starting to get a little concerned. Then at 7.50 they all turned up in one batch. I am just 1 missing. But if that 1 could stay with the others for 50 minutes it probably wasn’t going to be any good anyway.
So pleased with the first toss and will look to go again to the same place tomorrow.

Took the 22 back to the same place this morning. It was a bit cloudy with very little wind. I let them go at 7.05am. The came out quickly, batched up, circled once and headed of in the wrong direction lol. Nothing when I got home but they all came back together again at 7.48am. Slightly quicker than yesterday. Tomorrow morning looks like starting sunny so will go to the same place again. Then if the weather stays good enough I will take them a bit further Thursday & Friday.

The missing one wasn’t there this morning but on counting up when getting them in this afternoon I was back up to 23. So it must have turned up at some point during the day today. The only slight problem is that I’m not quite sure which one it is. So if they all seem ok when basketing them up in the morning it will have to go back again. Only the 9 miles though so should be fine. I have a rough idea on which one it is and if in any doubt I will leave it out.
