Think the lofts I know who do it have some one at home n birds are let go 30 mins apart so zero contact ,
Here in Australia they start racing in the middle of winter. It is 10 days until the shortest day here, and the first race is about 2 weeks after that. They do that because in the old days they had to be finished racing before the summer because the heat was too tough. Now with 'global warming / climate change', the weather is milder and they could start 4 to 6 weeks later most years, but "it's how we have always done it." Pigeon fanciers are not big on change.
So they train up a team of young birds, mixed sexes, and in the early races they tend to send the cocks, because they really don't want them. Same as if it looks like rough weekend, they keep the hens home and send the cocks.
By the end of spring, the cocks are driving the hens and wearing themselves out. So, of course, many are lost.
Most Aussies think cock birds are a bloody nuisance and want a shed full of hens. I put 12 youngsters in my mate David's loft when we moved, and he is very pleased that 10 of them are hens.
So, he thinks I am nuts because I like young cocks. I am happy to let them pair up and sit a pair of eggs. After about a million tosses and half dozen races, they seem to thrive on being able to sleep all day on a nest. It renews them.

Greetings from the land down under.
Blessed is he who expecteth nothing, for verily, he shall not be disappointed.

Why don’t they just split the sex to stop the cocks drivingMurray wrote: ↑Thu Jun 13, 2024 9:32 am Here in Australia they start racing in the middle of winter. Can u imagine breeding a greyhound before a race it be stone last n imagine breeding it after the race its all pointless ,,pigeon fanciers think pigeons needs rewards ,,mu pigeons rewards are the most important in life ,great home n great food ,,all them other things are in how heads ,,,yb win racing bk to loft n we think they need a hen to win because there 6 months older ,I don't believe in any of them things .
I don’t show haven’t for years it doesn’t work for me when I have but do uncover the bowl
My cocks know when it’s Friday I’m sure by feeding and little things that trigger it
Although I do believe the hen is important at home on Saturday others wise it’s just another day for him
He has his box all week it’s different for hens they get the box even if it’s empty
Every system suits hens in my view cocks only system that suits them more than hens is true widowhood
My old dark cock hated it when I started to race his hen blanked for 4 weeks and when you think he had 9 fed cards in the other 15 races it must have upset him

I don't like widowhood cocks, they way I race cocks I prefer over widowhood ,but the feeding is so different to feeding widowhood but it works for me perfectly.NeilA wrote: ↑Thu Jun 13, 2024 11:57 am I don’t show haven’t for years it doesn’t work for me when I have

Got to do what works best mate for your loft and your area
To be honest I got the system right these last 6/7 years for my tine my loft etc so I couldn’t change
I have 2 other systems in my head one used by a ace who doesn’t race now but I don’t have time to run it as a trial against what I do now so to scared to change
