The red pied hen in the middle of the picture, she is the 'surprise baby' from the old pied Jos Thone' hen and the light red Jos Thone' cock. I was so pleased to get her, and she is such a quality youngster, that she was labelled "stock" straight away.
She's flown with the others all the time, and when the old hen produced another pair I put her in with the others for a few practice tosses. She ended up going to a one hour toss on Wednesday and an hour and a half fly on Friday.
The races are not for months yet, which is why I wanted to get some hard work into them before the winter.
The red hen, 'Pippi' she's called, has proven she can do the job, two quite hard trainers in three days when only just out of the moult. So she's done now. She won't see a hamper again.
There are another 8 or 9 younger ones, very late bred, that won't be trained before the winter. But where I am, far out on the front mark, they will get some training and maybe jump in the races in the spring.
The racing here is mental. Take anything you know and throw it away.
