As you know I've had a bad year as far as the youngsters go having lost half of my team to PMV. I've still got 3 birds that haven't fully recovered and I've lost a couple of the ones that were amongst those worst affected but appeared to have recovered from training. That has left me with 14 that have been trained and 4 more that I might be able to start training with the view to giving them the last couple of races. Our Club voted to turn North Road for youngbird racing so we have had to join a new federation, we have joined the Sussex North Road Fed which was only started last season so it's all very new ground for us. Sadly we have lost several members including 3 of our biggest senders but still have a reasonably strong club with over a dozen flying members.
Unfortunately due to the sickness in the birds and then getting Covid I haven't managed to get the birds prepared as much as I'd have liked and they have only had 2 x 20mile trainers but as I really wanted to send to our longest race I needed to take a punt and just get them going.
With that in mind three weeks ago I sent 9 birds to Kettering which is 106miles to me, it was a tricky race for everyone but by nightfall I had 8/9 home which I was pretty satisfied with even though I was just over 100ypm behind the winner, I was the 6th member of 8 to clock and being as the other members had already had two races I wasn't too upset with that. Our next race which should have been Leicester, a jump of just 18miles to 124miles was cancelled but the powers that be decided to leave the next race as it was which would now be a jump of 44miles to 152miles from Ilkeston which is our longest race. I had 3 hens that went to Kettering lay during the week leading up to the race so decided to leave them behind but instead decided to put in 3 first timers. Again with a fairly strong South West wind in their beaks it turned out to be a tough race with many birds still missing by nightfall, I was again off the pace with the first of my birds arriving after 4.31 minutes recording a velocity of 985ypm. By the time I went to the club I only had 3/8 and none of the first timers but this turned out to be the case for most members with probably just under half of the birds sent still missing. The really strange thing about races like this is that across several organisations birds flying from the North to the South from several different race points into that head wind some birds were still recording velocities into the 1400s, I have to say not that many as the velocities soon dropped away. The winner in our club was the same fancier who won the previous race who was doing 1296ypm, the 2nd bird on the sheet was doing 1291ypm but by the time the 11th bird was clocked they were down to just over 1000ypm !!! I was 16th club and the 6th member from 7 to clock, I was a bit disappointed my birds were that far behind especially with the wind as it was but considering the preparation they've had I can't really expect too much. I did get 2 more birds back before 10am yesterday morning including 1 of the first timers so I'm reasonably pleased with that but would like to see the others return. We now have a revised programme with the next two races being from Bovingdon 60miles. The 5 I got last weekend probably won't race for a couple of weeks now but I do have the other 5 that will.
Sorry if that was a bit long winded : ;) all the best.

Welcome back Trev, good to see birds doing well and well done on performances so far considering all the obstacles in your way this year, hope the missing ones find home again and a question you asked me well the only answer I can give mate is train them and see how they go then make the decision as to send or not

Well I got 7/8 home in the end from Ilkstone so am very pleased with that πŸ‘πŸ€
We have had three more races since Ilkstone, unfortunately due to last weekend's weather all of them from Bovingdon 60miles to me. The birds have been coming well and the last two weeks I have crept up the sheet a bit, I was 9th Club and the 4th/9 members two weeks ago and last week I was 13th club 3rd/7 members. The really pleasing thing is that I have still only lost the 2 birds so far πŸ‘
I did however have a bit of a disastrous trainer this week, I had a mix of birds that wanted to try and get into the last couple of races so needed to get a couple more trainers in. On Monday my neighbour was working in Croydon (about 30miles as the crow flies) the birds I sent had either recovered from injury or PMV. I also sent a 2021 late bred, a young hen that flew Ilkstone but didn't go the previous weekend, 2 strays and the 3 babies I got from Buster. I got home from work to find just 2 birds home πŸ˜₯ the one that had flown Ilkstone and one of the strays πŸ™„πŸ˜Ÿβ˜Ή I had another return during the evening, this was one that returned a week late from Ilkstone. I had nothing else back on Tuesday but yesterday I found two more home when I got in from work, one that had recovered from PMV and the other stray πŸ™„ ( what is it with strays !! πŸ™β˜Ή) during the evening I had another return, this was a little Chequer hen of Busters πŸ‘today I've had one more home, this time the Blue pied Cock of Busters so I have to say I am well pleased with these two 😁 I now have 7/11 back, hopefully I'll get a couple more yet 🀞🀞
This week we are racing from Leicester so I'll up date you over the weekend πŸ‘ All the best.

Good to hear from you Trev.
Good to see you are having good results, albeit tempered with some losses.
Best of luck this week. :D

Good to see you back on Trev. Obviously I talk to you all the time anyway lol. Good to see your moving closer to the top in the Littlehampton club. North road is obviously better for you than South along the coast with you being more inland. Good that you still have a couple of Buster’s there. Good luck this coming weekend.
Back just enjoying club racing for the time being.

I'll have a proper look through what I have left when the season is finished George and let you know the answer to that one πŸ‘πŸ€
Unfortunately I lost so many of this years youngsters to PMV the figures may be a little misleading. I don't have many unraced birds, I did have 4 pairs of prisoners kindly given to me by Rich (Bryn) but sadly over two years I only 2 or 3 left from them.

Yes Steve I am gutted that I lost all those youngsters from you, they were some nice babies, I'm hoping to give the two I have left another trainer next week and then I'll decide whether to give them the last two races or not.
