I have always mixed my own feed, Trev. It is much cheaper than buying mixtures from grain stores, and I can make what I want.
This is what my pigeons are eating these days.
It's pretty basic, but the bit of vetch and two sorts of sunflower make it look a bit fancy.
I do have some breeder mix with popcorn included in it, so it has two sorts of maize and the breeder has different peas as well. I think it is a good thing and might keep including a portion of it in my feed mix.
It works here just now, because it has not too much maize or peas. Ideal for this hot weather. They might run a bit lean on it in your cold winters.
The reason there is 'two sorts of sunflower' in the mix is, my darling wife arrived home with a big bag of it she had bought at the supermarket in the pet food section.
Cheap!
She thought the pigeons might like it!
They do, too.
In the past they were not keen on sunflower, but they seem keen on it now. Have to ask her to get some more!

I take it that it’s the sunflower hearts you’re giving rather than the black or striped seeds. Mine love the hearts and peanuts. Both take a little bit for them to get the taste of but once they do they go made for it. I give mine a handful of peanuts most mornings. The hearts is down to Roxanna. When she fills the bird feeders for the wild birds she has the birds watching her and going made. She will then go into the loft and give them some hearts. If they’re out some will land on her in the garden looking for them.
Back just enjoying club racing for the time being.
No no, it is sunflower seed, black and striped. Just a sunflower seed mix from the supermarket.
Sunflower hearts are a health food shop thing here, and cost too much to be feeding to pigeons!

Oh. Yes sunflower hearts are expensive. Fortunately of course I buy them at trade price but they still have doubled. Although black sunflower is in the wild bird mixes the striped seeds are only really used for cockatiels, parrots, parakeets etc as the shells are generally quite tough.

I used to feed the black sunflower in NZ, but up until now they have not been keen on sunflower seeds in Australia. Of course I feed safflower all the time for it's fat content, so maybe they don't need it. But all of a sudden they are eating this mixed sunflower in the feed. I only add a little bit of it.

And that is why I never feed a lot of peas or beans.
They don't need them so they won't eat them. If pigeons have nothing but peas and beans to eat, they will eat peas and beans. Obviously.
It reminds me of the old crocodile hunter up in the top end of Australia. He was interviewed for a TV report. When asked if crocodile was good to eat he replied, "Its the best meat you can get, if you cant get any other meat".
I never stop looking at what they are eating, or more importantly, leaving.
I don't feed peas now but I do feed a lot of beans, during racing I even have beans in a hopper and they do clear them up.
Mine get sunflower hearts in the mix and extra as a treat along with peanuts and they also have the black sunflower seeds as they are in the wild bird mix.

I think we would struggle to find all those different seeds over hear without paying an arm and a leg for them as there are very few different grains actually grown round hear especially for bird feed.
