The loft is 36ft x 10ft - 6 sections and 5ft aviaries on the front of each section. It’s a tiled roof with a doweled out roof space so ventilation at least seems good - but let’s see what it’s like with pigeons in?!

The outline plan was to have 2 x stock sections, 2 x OB racing and 2 x YB racing. As you rightly say this year only I’ll potentially have 4 x 6ft x ft sections to house young birds and test them racing. That’s the theory at least!

I’ll have YBs arriving at different times so I’ll probably house them in different sections until they catch up with each other in terms of loft flying.

Again, that’s the theory. It’s a bit like reading a book on how to play Aussie Rules then running out onto the pitch!
Only asking but why would you want to stock section one should be more than sufficient especially if they prisoner stock
I’m planning on a distance team and a sprint / middle team so keep the prisoner stock teams separate in this first year whilst I’m sorting what’s what, then be able to split them cocks and hens out of breeding season. Not sure it’ll work that way in practice mind!

Pete why not have 1 stock section then 2 cocks section 1 hen section so you can split your cocks in two 2 teams distance and sprint
I only have one section but keep thinking of adding another cocks loft as I’m thinking about trying a few a bit further as we are getting less and less fanciers in the fed ,it’s so much easier if you have say a distance birds back from a 400 mile race and sprint aimed at a 100 mile race that same week . Plus your feeding will be very different not only that but you can treat the distance birds in the water on there week off where you might not want to be treating the others that are going Friday
I’m sort of planning something along those lines. The two prisoner stock sections bit was about being able to split the distance stock and sprint / middle distance stock separate in this first year plus being able to split them cocks and hens out of breeding season.

I’ll probably rationalise my race team plans once I realise how difficult it’s going to be, but in my daft head at the moment I’m thinking of racing both north and south with my distance team, then probably just south with my sprint / middle team. Already I can see a separate stock loft appearing somewhere!

That’s a lot your doing there
my friend tried to race sprint north and distance south and found that hard work plus with no sprinters going south he was obviously behind on all the lead up races and races between
Dont make things to hard mate I would like to fly to 500 miles myself but with room for 18-20 cocks I know it would be hard to compete against lads with big teams that are home each day so I currently only go to 300 miles

Just enjoy being back Pete, keep it simple and plenty of observation getting to know your birds mate. Best of luck for your coming season.

Thank you Devo. A lot of wisdom in that ‘keep it simple’ message.

I’m certainly not going to get ahead of myself. My way in life has always been to try and start with the end in mind, hence why I’ve started with a far bigger loft than I need. It’s probably going to sound ridiculous when I say this, but when I put the base down and the concrete was still drying I scraped ‘1st NFC’ into it. It’s likely that I’d do well to get into the first 500, but I’ve laid that marker down.

In truth, if get to see one of my birds fold its wings and drop from 500 miles again like when I was a kid, irrespective of whether I ever win a place at even club level, it’ll all have been worth it!

I’ll take my time Neil. We can have a laugh in a few years about my daft plans! :D

Also, I have some kind folk breeding me some YB to race. Is the normal form to send my own rings or transfer the ring numbers the breeder uses of his own?

Thanks in advance.
You're in a one off situation here Pete where you'll only have YB to think about and no OB.

Given the fact that all your breeders will be untested on your garden, there's a natural desire to want to take as many as you can from them to start to sort out which are the best

How many rounds from the Stock to take?

Easy answer. What's the maximum no. of YB that you can manage effectively ?

Divide that by your breeding pairs and you have your answer

So say you say you have 10 pairs at Stock and you say you want a YB team of say 60 then that's 3 rounds

Thanks Mike. Makes a lot of sense. I did reply the other day but for some reason it’s not appeared.
