Trev wrote: Fri Feb 21, 2025 2:37 pm I'm not surprised, unfortunately it's like all animal sports, the owners let themselves down. It's not necessarily what the animal goes through during it's working life, although some are treated appallingly, but it's what happens to them when they are of no use anymore. Many years ago I did some work for a couple who ran a greyhound rescue, most of the dogs they had were ex racers, and most of them had been found abandoned with ears missing. The ears were removed, along with the identification tattoo that was inside the ear !!
I know as with most things, it's the minority that let the majority down, but we, as so called pigeon fanciers, are just as bad when we get rid of birds that no longer measure up !!!
Your probably right but what can we do with ones that just home Trev
We would need to house them seperate as if they retained a box we would end up breeding less ybs and maybe not finding enough good yearlings over time we could end up with 75 per cent of the boxes occupied by birds that could never win a card
Totally understand your point but I am not sure how we could compete if we didn’t remove the homers unless you kept a massive team

What age do they finish racing ? To be honest only been a couple of times many years ago .
Not being one to ever bet on anything I guess I never had the interest

Is it banned due to there time as racers or lack of after care when they are finished
Hello Neil, I think he's about 4 years old, I would say if he hasn't done much winning then there moved on pretty early, he's an Irish dog & did win as found something online him running, other than that the information is very limited, he still has his tattoos inside his ears, maybe he was moved on because they found out he has a heart mumour, but they check regularly at the vet's he's one of the lucky ones.
Regards Dave.

It’s great he’s found a good home
Might sound daft but can he go off the lead or is that a no no

My daughter goes away with him on breaks away, he good when walking they only let him off if they are on the beach or in a big field, he's good with other dog's, but you have to be careful if he sees cat's, squirrel, pheasant, he will chase them, so you have to watch them all the time it's in them to hunt you'll never change that.
Regards Dave.

To be left in a barn, was taken in by the Welsh greyhound rescue, my daughter has taken this dog on, has settled after about a year with issues but is gradually improving .
Regards Dave.
I am in full agreement with you Dave, that was part of the sport I did not enjoy. I found good home for my dog and happy to say it was on a farm. So I was pleased when I left the sport. knowing my dog was safe.

We sponsor a dog and have done for a while.
Good for you Devo, they are beautiful dogs and make amazing pets.
Yes Trev, if I had the space I would love one as a pet, also the problem may be the size of them. I would worry about it knocking Maria over.

Totally understand as he’s trained for it on top

I'm not surprised. It's not much of a life for some of them. Some people take great care of them but others, sadly, not so much.
They tried to ban it in one stage here about 10 years ago, but there was such a protest they backed down. All racing codes are big here, major employers and generate massive amounts of tax revenue.
The sport has tried hard to improve it's image here, but I suspect some of it still isn't very nice.

As far as I know, I think there is only one track left in Scotland, Thornton. So I think it was dying in Scotland anyway.

Grehound racing in Scotland is not yet band, but the greens are pushing for it, and are raising it in the scottish parliament today.
