I've seen those things they use for horses - they are rock hard! No way is a pigeon gonna peck at it.
But like Winsfort said they get the salt from the wet rope - suck, lick, peck, who knows???

Salt licks in breeding season, you put a salt lick in breeding season you won't get one bad dropping and won't need to use black or pink minerals either just a bit of grit and a salt lick and there perfect ever wondered why in winter you never see a wood pigeon in the road but summer time they stand in the road looking dumb refusing to move its because they have baby's in the nest and there searching for salt of the roads only reason ,

Welcome back Tony, hope you have been well!

That makes a lot of sense regarding the Wood Pigeons!

Makes you think really!
