I think you're onto a good idea with the cocks

The bit that you might find emotionally challenging is if the cocks racing ability is impacted by the hens racing too

So, it's a bit of a fact finding mission

Me, I'm never afraid to experiment because its only by doing this that you learn




Take Phil we're on a completely different YB feeding regime this year

It's not for me to be honest, I feel out of control.

I gave Phil the option to revert back at the weekend but he's happy with the new regime at the mo, so we'll continue that way

But the judges scorecard will be assessed at the end of the YB season you can be assured of that

In my head the first 4-5 races all go
Using the perch / box from training as reward
Then if we try the idea out we spoke about and the races fall like this year
Hens fly every other week in the nrcc cocks fly every other week in the lnrc so the cocks arrive to hens although losses might bugger that up
But it gives me 15 fresh pigeons for each Saturday

One thing's for sure, you won't know until you try

If I get it right the box would become a focus what with breeding out of the cocks next year for the first time in years

Can I ask Neil why don’t you breed out of your racing cocks?
In theory these should be superior to what they’re bred out of if your breeding is right. I know some will still be being tested/unproven. But as you know I don’t keep stock birds. The only stock birds I would keep would be retired races, but they would have already proved their breeding quality before being stopped. So for me as much as I’m testing a birds racing ability I’m also testing their future breeding potential.
To bred from the racers, especially if on widowhood, you do have to breed early and split them before re-pairing to sit a second round for 10 days just prior to racing to stop them from starting moulting. My cocks are just dropping their third flights. They have been rearing a round of latebreds which have now been weaned and are back down on pot eggs. They are now starting to fall apart.

Hello Mike, you said Phil is on a different feeding regime this year, it's not for you & feel out of control. Also the option to change back but Phil was happy with it, could you explain your thoughts about this please, only trying to learn from you Mike if that's ok.

I believe that most people get cocks all wrong

They think it's all about the hen

It's not

It's the box - they race for the box first and foremost

I would never ever ask my widowers to go down on eggs for a second time before racing

The cock and the hen were removed from each other whwn the YB was about 17 days old

Either the cock was left with the young, or the young were away with the hens

Getting em down on a second round was a big no-no for me

Hi Dave

Yes, of course, no probs

As a general rule for the last 2.5 years when racing I tell Phil what to feed and any water/additives that need adding

As such I know what I'm doing

The YB feed regime this year is different. It was my idea to try it and Phil agreed

Last 2 weeks Phil has been 1st and 2nd, then 2nd but I'm not 100% happy with it (his droppings are bang on)

In a nutshell its the same way of feeding every day of the week

I like to manipulate the feed a bit more

Whilst I guide Phil I always let him have the final say. He's the man with the scraper and their his birds - so whilst I might "advise" the final say is his.. If I felt strongly enough about it, those sentiments would be echoed - but as it stands we're on a fact finding mission and the more we test the more we'll learn
