We have just been informed, that due to the ongoing rain at the liberation site we will not be getting a race today, they are hoping for an early liberation tomorrow.
Although on the whole I've tried to send pairs, I do have a couple of hens at home that are due to go back down on eggs this week who's cock birds are away. So with all my birds, young and old in together with some of the young cocks now getting a bit active, I could have a few rucks going on when my birds do get home.
All part and parcel of my random system I guess.

The 1345 Combine birds were liberated at 6.30 this morning into a West South West wind.
Optimistically I'll be looking for one around the 6hr mark, but realistically I recon it will be more like 7hrs, good luck all.

Sorry for the late report, it wasn't the race I'd hoped for, turned out to be real challenge for some, with a lot of birds not making it.
I got down the loft in plenty of time, I decided to go through my youngsters while I was wait and put them in the baskets for a bit of experience, I have to say I've got quite a nice little team there.
It was fairly warm in the sun with a fairly blustery South West wind, my optimistic time came and went again. It was fast approaching my realistic time, I was pacing up and down the path when a little Chequer pied appeared on the perfect line, straight off the downs from the North. She folded up her wings as she approached, but unfortunately for good measure she decided to do a few laps of honour before finally coming down onto the loft and in, she was on the clock in a time of 6hrs 54mins 33secs. Apart from her wasting a bit time before landing, which always feels much longer than it actually is, I was pretty pleased with her performance and was expecting the rest of the Gem to start dropping in. I had to wait 15mins for 2nd bird, another 2 year old hen, she too came straight off the downs and was followed 6mins later by my 3rd hen, this one is a 3 year old who was only having her 2nd race of the season. Well that was my excitement over, it was now going to become a nervous wit to see how many of my 25 birds would make it. It was nearly 45mins before my 4th bird arrived, then half an hr for another. By the time I went to club I still only had 8/25 home, at the club there were quite a few glum faces as most members were in the same boat, with alot of empty perches.
I have to admit that when the result came off the printer I was a little disappointed, as with the conditions as they were I did feel it was going to my 2nd win of the year, which as it turned out, if the hen hadn't have done her extra laps it may well have been as it was 2nd place would have to do. However, you never know what trapping issues others might have had so just have to suck it up and take it on the chin.
On arriving back home I was hoping to see a few more arrivals, unfortunately this wasn't to be, there were only 2 more home giving me 10/25 with some good, experienced birds still out. Next day I had 2 early ones before work, I was again hopeful of getting a few more home during the day. I would continue to be disappointed with just one more making it on day two, over the next 3 days I had one more each day giving me a total of 16/25, I am very disappointing with some good decent birds still missing, 5 of them very promising yearlings. Returns in the Federation were very patchy with some getting most home while others, like me, having big losses.
Hey ho, onwards and upwards, we keep on going, it's happened before and will certainly happen again.
Sorry if that was a bit long winded, this is my clock sheet, club result and Federation result, just awaiting the Combine result, currently it looks like our Fed winner will be 2nd Combine, so well done to Andy and well done to Brian for taking first spot in our club, he's been there or there abouts all season so deserved a win.

This week our birds are back at Rugby (109mls for me) they are looking at an early liberation to try and avoid the heat, I have 12 in this one today. Good luck to all our members.

Very sorry to hear about last weeks race, Trev.
Losing 9 when they'd been going so well is a real disappointment. And the fact that other's were in the same boat really doesn't make it any better, in my book.
Still, you were in a photo finish so very close, well done.

I had 2 yearlings return this week from the bad Hexham race, one couldn't stand properly as he had some kind of twine around his feet, much longer and he'd have started to lose toes, and possibly even the whole foot on one leg. He's fine now, the other was very light but after a couple of days has found his mojo again. I think the change in wind direction got them moving, I'm hopeful that a couple more will make it back yet.

The less said about last weeks race the better, most of my better birds stayed at home in readiness for this weeks combine race but I still had my winner in the team so expected better from him. He was sitting overdue eggs so I think he'd lost his edge, hopefully he'll have that back for next week.


This week we are at Kelso with the Combine, its 339miles for me, the birds were liberated at 6am this morning in light South west wind.
Six hours would be very nice but in reality I reckon it will be nearer 8hrs, good luck to all our members and of course their birds.

Well done to Dave Bridger for winning the club and to Terry pay on topping the fed, Terry and Roy Underdown aren't actually that far from me as the crow flies which made my day even more disappointing, anyway onwards and upwards.

That was a bit disappointing, Trev, but I guess you have to let someone else have a turn.
