Well, like everybody else in the world the birds are mapped in a straight line from liberation point to the home

So, "in theory" the fastest route home sees them flying in a straight line

But that involves them breaking out of the convoy and taking to the channel pretty much on their own

Whether they are good enough / brave enough to do that is another matter

Yes. I was just suggesting, a bit in jest, that it could make a difference in time and the mileage they actually do. It would depend on whether the wind keeps them inland a bit, the difference in wind speed and air temperature depending on whether they go inland or oversea. Could be interesting for our guesses.

Yes, the desire is for them to head out across the water - but of course 95% of the convoy aren't interested in doing that because they fly "inland"
