Yes this was a racing sport years ago, birds racing back to a tea chest in the back yard. This was in Liverpool.

Brilliant, I love it, I can imagine that would be a great form of community entertainment, sadly I think you'd struggle to find a pub down here that would be happy to accommodate anything like that, infact it won't be long before you struggle to find a pub full stop.

The days of pigeon clubs at pubs in my area are gone
I would say 75 per cent now seem to expect you to eat and not just go for a pint and they don’t want pigeons where they serve food

I would say 75 per cent now seem to expect you to eat and not just go for a pint and they don’t want pigeons where they serve food

I must say the social side is one of the things that is great about our club. It’s in a social club with a cricket pitch, squash courts, tennis courts and a skittle alley. 2 bars and cheap drinks. They put on many different events over the year. A couple of weeks ago they had their flower and vegetable show in there. Carrots over 2 feet long and dahlias with heads like dinner plates etc. We have a couple of sheds and an under cover section for marking the birds.

In our town of Wincanton we had 9 pubs here just a few years ago. Now only 5 left. We have one next door to us and one opposite. Both were closed by 8.30 last night. That’s in a town of 6,000 residents. The supermarkets being able to sell alcohol and the closing of off licences killed the pub trade.

Yes, the pub is a dying thing.
Here in St Arnaud there are many pubs on the main street, most of them empty. Part of it is changing habits, but also the law has made anyone who has a beer and drives home a criminal. The limit is so low that a spoonful of cough mixture will nearly put you over.
Of course you mustn't have 4 pints then get behind the wheel, but I very nearly got charged once for being borderline after one half pint. The cop must have been having a good day and let me go.

We are lucky enough to have our club base at the local Tades and Labour club, so we also have cheap beer and a pretty good social aspect to the racing, winner buys the beers so it's often a very cheap night for me

Unfortunately the pubs need to start stocking a bigger range of zero alcohol beers as there are some pretty decent ones around now, unfortunately it will get even worse for pubs if they do ban smoking in outside them too !!
