I decided to take the opportunity of the temperature being a bit cooler this morning and took the youngsters for their first training toss. It was a lovely clear morning with a light NW wind and 13c. I took all 35 youngsters and 16 old birds to Frome show ground, 10 miles for them. I let them go at 6.40am. They done a couple of half circles and were gone heading towards home. I messaged Roxanna to let her know I had let them go. Roxanna went out into the garden at 6.55 and they were already back. I haven’t got them in yet so don’t know for sure but looks like they are all there. Will have a count up when I get them in.
I will probably try to go again tomorrow before it really starts to heat up again over the weekend.

It's always a huge bonus when the first toss goes well, I think. The youngsters learn that it doesn't hurt, and there's nothing to be frightened of.

Thanks Murray. I think I’m possibly 1 youngster missing and a latebred who would have been having his first toss. Otherwise all here . Pleased to get the first one done and for them to be so quick and well beat me home, even better. The old birds probably helped.

Latebreds.
They are a waste of time.
They miss the education as babies and when they go in the box they promptly get lost.
Said me, who has half a dozen latebreds, which will inevitably get lost.
Unless, I do what a bloke I knew in New Zealand did. If he had late bred youngsters, they went in the hampers with the young birds, even if they were still squeaking. That's what I am doing with these. Every bird with a 2021 ring on it is going in the box. If they can fly in the team and trap, they can be trained. If I don't, I am not doing them a favour. Next year they will be the first ones lost.

I miss counted the youngsters. One was still out, Buster’s blue pied cock, he was up on the house roof chasing a wood pigeon lol. So all youngsters are back.
