Our small town of Wincanton has a population of under 6,000. It has a long standing association with the forces and in particular with the royal air force. We are near to Westlands where some of the helicopters are made and also near to Yeovilton air base. A lot of members of the forces live in Wincanton. One of air force battalions had been granted the freedom of the town a few years ago.
Today as part of their 55 year anniversary since its formation they upheld their right of freedom of the town with a ceremony and parade through the town.
We had been told in advance that the high street would be closed from 7.00am till 12.00am. We had to arrange for our deliveries to come this afternoon instead of this morning but not a problem. Nothing was allowed to be left out in front of the shops and any cars left in the way would be towed down to the local sports ground. At least one car was towed away.
First thing this morning we had a big police presence. They were checking everything and everywhere for any suspicious objects including looking under all cars etc in car parks with mirrors. There was also a large drone flying high over the town from 7.00am until the event was over. The ceremony started at 9.30 with a march up from the bottom of the town up into the high street where it stopped for an hour and a half for various ceremonies. These included a few tunes played out by the band. Starting and finishing with the National anthem. This included a rendition of the dambusters march with the inclusion of 3 helicopters flying overhead. Unfortunately videos don’t work on here but I have got it on video. A great spectacle. Finally with 2 police horse’s leading the way followed by the band and the solders from the air force.

Everything reopened at around 12.30 and all went back to normal with no sign of what had happened apart from 2 piles of horse poo on the road lol.

Andy posted the videos in our brothers WatsApp group and they did put on a great performance it's good to see some of our Great British culture still continuing in some parts of the country.

Isn't it just

So our little town was at it again today. We had a new museum opening. Really an old one but in a new premises. The day was called Wincanton history day. They had a few different things happening up through the high street based on the olden days. They had a place which had been transformed into an old school where some children from the local school dressed up in old clothing and were having lessons as they would have done in Victorian times. There was also a shop that was turned into old stile tea rooms. Unfortunately as we were open we couldn’t get out to have a good look around but there was a parade of some old cars lead by a horse and cart.
The Dolphin hotel is right opposite our shop. It was quite apt that the horse and cart stopped outside as it used to be a coaching inn.

Cracking pics mate, love to see all the old stuff, I was going to say about it being an old coaching in then seen you had, you can always tell them with the arches

That's lovely matched team of horses on the coach, too. Trust me to notice that.

Great pictures again Andy It is nice to see some or our old towns and villages still making the effort to put on event's like this, I have to say that was one thing that I loved about living on the Isle of Wight, there was always something going on at one place or another summer or winter.

They were certainly lovely horses any very nicely turned out.
