I must say that mine have all built good nests. I never put anything in the bowls but put hand’s full of straw down in the corner on the floor and leave them to build their own. Some do more than others but all have quite good nests.

I must admit that this bunch of pigeons I have now are some of the worst I have ever had for nest building, I do use nest felts these days but do also put straw in the loft for them. As you say some use it others don't, quite often I just end up with pigeons nesting in it on the floor instead. I do find that the pairs are completely different, I find some build nests before they lay, others once they've laid and some don't bother until the eggs are due to hatch. My birds are still shut in at the moment but will start picking up twigs etc once they are back on an open loft, what they really liked were the pine needles from our neighbours tree which sadly isn't there any more.
I have put straw in with my stock pairs but they haven't done much with it yet.

That's a good nest mate and a nice bit of barley straw too by the looks of it πŸ‘πŸ˜

Yep, and some are dead lazy and will only build a decent nest if you put a bowl full of straw in the box.
Some of mine like the gum tree leaves and spend hours flying in and out collecting them. The eucalyptus oil in them repels bugs and lice too.
At present they are locked in the shed and nesting in the straw on the floor.
It's another thing that makes pigeon fancying so interesting. :D

They certainly know what they like, I suppose they're not that different to people really ! Some like a cosy and tidy nest, some like it minimal and others are happy to live in shit πŸ˜πŸ˜‚πŸ€£
