Yesterday morning I finally managed to drag myself out of my pit and get my babies basketed for another trainer. It's a bit of an ordeal this year as I have far too many youngsters and I can only take a couple of crates in my car so can't train them all together, this means I have to check every number to make sure I'm sending the same birds that went last time. Anyway I got up at half 5 and by 6am I'd sorted 19 of the 24 that had been a couple of weeks ago (3 I left out had injuries and the other 2 I missed 😬 ) plus 11 first timers, so just after 6am I was on my way with 30 youngsters leaving me 13 at home. It was cloudy but bright enough with no wind to speak of, I went to a different location (due to the 3 being injured) to the last one but it was still around the 12mile mark. I let them up just before 6.30, they circled a few times and went up pretty high, by the time I left they were still circling. I got home around 7am, put the baskets away, made myself a cup of coffee and sat in the garden to see them home. By 8am I decided I had to feed the rest of the birds and by 8.15 I had to give up and leave for work with not a feather home 😬😕 I got home from work about half 5 and went straight up the garden to see if I had any home, I had a rough count up and reckoned I was about 10 a drift, I have a lot of Blues and Blue Checkers this year so its difficult to work out who's missing but there were a couple of Grizzles, pieds and a red that had obviously made it home and there were a couple of pieds that weren't back. I had to go out again at half 6 so couldn't have a proper check until I got home, I got in about half 10 and went down to the loft. I don't have electric down there so had to use the torch on my phone but on counting my babies I now had 42 in there so was just the 1 missing, that missing one has obviously turned up today as I now have 43 again, I never want that many youngsters again 😬😬😬 I'm planning on taking them again tomorrow, hopefully a bit further, I have no idea which youngster turned up today so unless there is something that makes it stand out the poor thing will go again too. If I get time I might even give the remaining 13 a short one as well to get them moving.
First race is a week Sunday so I need to get few more tosses in before then.
