I was reading the blog of Ad Schaerlaeckens earlier. Today he mentions pigeons flying at high speed after getting up high where the winds are stronger.
It got me thinking.
Last year I had a young bird that won a race by minutes, arriving home on his own well before I saw another one. It caused a few raised eyebrows, but the clock don't lie.
I didn't think too much of it, I figured he had just broken away at the point I had been training from and put a gap on them.
But maybe when he broke away, about 20 miles away, he went up into the strong tailwind? He was certainly going at a rate of knots when he came over the house and swung in!
It's all food for thought.
The pigeon was certainly no superstar, I gave him a week off, sent him back and never saw him again.....

There’s a lot we don’t know. I love seeing mine go really high. They certainly do that when seeing off a BOP. The wind can certainly be at different speeds at different heights. Occasionally you can even see the clouds going in different directions and speeds at different altitudes.
I remember many years ago lol, in the sea swim at Worthing where we had a sea race from Worthing pier along the coast for a mile. I was about 17 at this time. I was one of the fastest in the club at that time but inexperienced at racing in the sea. We had a starting point and a finish but apart from that could be as close or as far away from the coast as we wanted. Myself and a few of the younger members raced quite close to the shore. I thought I was winning but unbeknown to me a wise older swimmer was racing much further out. He won and I was second. I had been swimming through the current and waves and he had been swimming where the sea was much calmer.

Different height difference thermal speeds a pal told me who flys a small plane all so he said above land turbalonce is awful but over water its like flying through silk zero turbulence n really smooth.

I won't share my thoughts on sea racing.

Well my thoughts are, it takes longer for birds to clear at liberation on the sea. Compared to birds liberated on land. This may be through the magnetic fields.

Look at the difference in the sky. The liberation from the boat was terrible. Dark skies and birds going all ways, looked like some even flew into each other. Are these sea liberations from a ship that has anchored up for a couple of hours or so before release? I doubt it.
