Andy wrote: Tue May 28, 2024 8:13 am This week we were back at Stoney Cross again 34 miles. 4 times out of 6 races so far this season. Only 3 more times lol.
1129 birds from 96 lofts and 11 clubs were liberated at 9.30 in clear skies and a light SE.
I sent 16 birds. 10 widowhood cocks and 6 naturals that were having their first race, including 2 latebred cocks that had never been in the basket before.
I had my first 2 together at around 10.09. 39mins. It was a nice warm morning with clear blue skies. These 2 were both widowhood cocks. After such a short fly and with lovely weather they were on a bit of a jolly. They just clapped around landed once then took off again before eventually being on the clock at 10.12. I had 3 more together just after that also clapped around a bit but all 5 were clocked within 2 minutes. All widowhood cocks. A few minutes later I had the first of the natural hens. I had 10/16 within 30 mins. 4 more, including a cock who had been coming well, turned up during the afternoon. These had obviously gone over with the bulk of the combine which as the combine winners were all in Bristol and taken a line well North of me. From such a short distance the birds don’t have much chance or incentive to break out of the main batches. The only 2 missing were 2 latebred cocks having their first time in a basket. 1 was here when I got back from the club and the other one turned up the next day.
Next weeks race is from Eastbourne 118 miles so should give them more time to sort themselves out.
Why do you think you had a 3 min trap with widows Andy ? Are they seeing the hens to often or not understanding the system ?
I didn’t show the hens before basketing this week Neil. I don’t know whether that made a difference. But also they were only flying for 40 minutes and it was a lovely day. The race had taken nothing out of them at all. They are out for longer than that every day during the week. They have been trapping well. It will be interesting to see how they are this weekend at Eastbourne 118 miles.
It will be a very different race this weekend Andy, good luck bruv.

We actually went a bit further this week. Eastbourne 118 miles. It has been a particularly difficult couple of weeks for me on a personal level. Because of Roxanna having to be down the hospital with her aunt in her final couple of days I couldn’t see the birds home this week as I was on my own in the shop. I had the ETS on and traps open. As I wasn’t going to be able to see them arrive letting the widowhood cocks into their hens I just left the hens lose in the loft so that th3 cocks could get with them on their arrival.
I had sent 16. The 10 widowhood cocks and 6 naturals.
The birds were liberated at 9.30 in a North wind. I thought about 2 and a half hours. I was able to pop up to the loft a few times during the afternoon. I first went up there at around 12.15. I found I had 3 on the clock. The first was on at 12.03, Muzzaboy Murray. This is the second time his been first bird this season. I had 2 more on the clock at 12.10. The first is a 4 year old bred from a cock from Devo x a hen from Pete Davenport. This cock really hadn’t done much until this year. He seems to have clicked on widowhood and is getting better every race. I had 4 widowhood’s before the first Naturals and when going up the club I had all 10 widowhood’s but only 2 of the naturals. I was a little behind but not too bad. These birds are the ones I was originally looking to get to Barcelona so distance pigeons really but happy to continue to work with these. There did seem to be some big gaps from most members in their arrivals.
This our club result.

Our club pretty much dominated the combine result along with Crewkerne.

I did have a latebred cock back when I got home from the club. This pigeon was having only his second race having been next day last week. He is still carrying 5 nest flights from last year. Could be one for the future. He hadn’t even been in a basket before last weeks race.
Back just enjoying club racing for the time being.

That was better Andy, looking at the times and velocities you were well in it. Well done.
Good to see the Muzzaboy is showing some worth. :D
Those birds just need a little bit of distance to give them the chance to do something.
Greetings from the land down under. :D

To be honest Andy, shorter race distances where going to be a problem to you. So its good to see the distance improved for your birds to be in it. Well done mate.

This week we had our first race with the 3 counties. The race was put back to Sunday because of the forecast. As we aren’t actually members of the 3 counties yet we are only able to send as a club and as trainers. But at least it gives us a bit more distance. The WOESRC who we normally race with were at Stoney Cross yet again, 34 miles to me. Maidstone is 128 miles.
We were hoping to have been picked up at around 9.30pm Saturday evening. But because of some jobs worth traffic police officer who pulled the transporter over on the M5 and insisted on seeing all the relevant paperwork for both the transporter and driver they didn’t get to us until 11.00pm. The stupid thing is that the lorry is only 4 years old and in good condition.

The birds were released at 6.44am in a light NW wind and clear skies. I thought around 3 hours would be a go one. Being a Sunday I was able to watch for them as we don’t open the shop on a Sunday. At 9.46 I had a pigeon coming straight towards the loft landed straight on the drop board and trapped. 5 minutes later I had a second who trapped just as well. He was thirsty though. Because of the hold up the evening before and going into the metal Geraldy crates instead of the old wooden ones from the combine I did wonder how well they drunk on the lorry. I then had to wait 20 minutes for the next one and then had 3 in a couple of minutes. I ended up last night with 10/13 including a late bred cock still carrying 5 nest flights having his 3rd race. In fact only having his 3rd time in a basket having never been trained before his first race.
My first bird was a 4 year old cock. Bred from a cock from Devo and a hen from Pete Davenport, both having flown Poitiers with the BICC. Up until this year he had done nothing. He probably would have been got rid off in many lofts. He had been raced both South over the channel and North but had never been on the day. He was also one that although not wild hated being caught. This year on widowhood he is a different pigeon. Looks different, handles different and is much calmer. He has been improving every week. Last week he was my 2nd bird. Second bird this week was the blue pied cock from Buster.
This is this weeks result.
