Sorry for answering but yes around a 1/4 ounceCHARLTON34 wrote: ↑Tue Jul 30, 2024 1:55 pmHello NeilA, sorry to ask you I've looked at this post I can't get my head around it please can you clarify for me.NeilA wrote: ↑Mon Jul 08, 2024 7:26 amHi King
What I do is let out about 6am
Feed in with 7 gram per bird of a mix of barley and seed . Then go to work and train after work so I get the fly out of them plus there hungry so not really had a bad toss there
Each time I have arrived home with them in
Normally I only go there once maybe twice but this year I went 3 times not for any reason just to keep them training as the weather has been so poor here I just got one in between showers yesterday
Tonight they will go about 8/9 miles for 3 days then to 15 for 3 days
After that I go 20 miles 3 times then 25 miles north east and 25 miles north west both about 3 times
After that as many as I can at 20 miles ( my break point and 3-4 nights a week for the 5 or 6 weeks I race at 20 miles
So you said you feed in 7 grams per pigeon to get them in, in old money NeilA what's that in ounces, I've tried to covert it but without much luck would it be about 1/4 ounce & in total per day what do they get in ounces.
Regards Dave

Yes that’s it thanks all
7gram morning 28 at night
My old birds I give more in the morning
12 grams 23g at night as I fly them out at 5pm so a bit more in the crop so I get a good fly after work where the babies go out early before work and I want them looking for grub at night
There’s always some barley in the mix they have all corn removed 15 mins after it’s fed it’s all light stuff Dari/ wheat / rice / maize / safflower / barley etc
This is only sprint racing though remember
I do give 2/3 grams of hemp to the cocks Wednesday
All the birds get more Thursday night 10-15g more depending on the race / wind
maybe fats or more carbs
Sometimes the Wednesday ration could include more fats if it’s looking a bit stiff Saturday
On return Saturday a tray regularly added to of energy / fats maybe a few chicken pellets and loads of grit and minerals
I don’t use peas / beans for racing but I don’t race longer races so can’t say past 300 miles really
It’s a simple system
Really you need a bag of say VL energy mix
A bag of depurative and say a bag of Gerry plus mixed together
Then Thursday I just tend to feed the Gerry what ever you decided on
I think Bamfords do one superfly sure there are many others like beyers Gaby
I use to increase the grams per day from 30 32 35 etc but I think I over thought it a bit ,as is my way

Can I ask why you don't feed peas Neil, I know you don't race distance but what part do they play in under 300 miles if fed, I used to use a good all rounder/ widowhood mix when I raced at all distances

Well I think. the energy mix has just as high protein as peas or beans it also breaks down quickly so they get that plus it has the fats
I’m not mad on protein for sprinting unless they need repair then again the energy mix does that or powders if you prefer plus the mix I use will be low protein but still be around 8-10 per cent maybe a little higher with the fat seeds used AM
Also I have read that heavy protein can thicken the blood
I believe adding the energy mix Saturday better than a heavy protein
So my birds get protein but not in a hard to digest grain
Thanks for that, have to say never really understood the feeding that is probably why I used all rounder/widowhood mixNeilA wrote: ↑Tue Jul 30, 2024 4:23 pmWell I think. the energy mix has just as high protein as peas or beans it also breaks down quickly so they get that plus it has the fats

I agree with Neil. I feed peas to the youngsters while they are growing, but once they are flying well I cut them down and they get a lot of safflower and sunflower. Saff has 16% protein so they get all the protein they need. There are about 20% peas in my regular mix that I feed to everything, so After I add more energy seeds they get about 5 to 10% peas, They only eat them if they feel the need.

The Gerry and Gaby mixtures are both heavy in safflower so idealMurray wrote: ↑Tue Jul 30, 2024 11:09 pm I agree with Neil.
