Breeding
When we select the couples for breeding. We try to Balance it out as much as possible a big cock gets a small hen and a small cock gets a bigger hen. With this we dont look to much at the pedigree or if its going to be inbreed or not. So i very rarely breed by pedigree when it comes to racing atleast. Our pigeons get paired up at the start of december already So the first youngsters get their band around 5-15th january. During the breeding period for the racing pigeons. The couples recieve 20% of p40 pellets which contain amino acids protein etc to their normal feed. Additionally to this they get E-50 and Optibreed from rohnfried.
Training
Our old birds will stay locked in until around march now and then intensive training around the house will start again. First 2 weeks of april they will be trained with a mate from the club together about 15-20 miles everyday just so they get a feeling again to be basketed. In the middle of april we have 4 training flights with the whole combine before the actual races start.
Racing system
I will only race hens with the widowhood system. They will recieve a partner for about 1-2 hours 1 day before basketing. Alot of people do it on the day of basketing but i seen in an interview of a very successful racer that he doesn't prefer to do it on the basketing day because afterwards the hens are to active. He prefers them to be calm and i kinda agree with his logic so i will do it the same way. When the hens return from the race they will get another 1-2 hours with the cock together. Important here is that they don't get fed until seperation. Other then that is pretty basic and normal. The only thing that will be rather trial and error will be the supplements ill be using the same supplement system that i been using for my youngsters which i been having super results with. Im not sure if it will work for the old ones aswell but since its my first year i will have to find that out for mysefl and then adjust down the line
Feed
They will be feed with 2 different mixtures from Paloma. One of them beeing Paloma d100 and the other is Paloma d12
Paloma d100 is a rather heavy mixture which they will be fed about 5 days of the week. Our races are on a saturday basketing on a friday. They recieve this mixture from Sunday-Thursday
Paloma d12 is a super diat food they will recieve on the basketing day and the day of arival. On the basketing day im not sure if will do this for old ones aswell but we do this for the youngsters because they tend to not drink once basketed in the car. We soak the super diat food in water for hours before feeding.
Additionally almost everyday they recieve hemp seeds and on basketing day peeled sunflower seeds for extra energy depending on distance.

I have only been racing pigeons myself since 3 years and so far its only been youngsters. I could tell you alot about that but with old birds this will be my first year. unfortunatelly we had rather tough season with alot of losses in the whole combine so ill only start with 17 yearlings so we will see how far along they will last meNeilA wrote: ↑Sun Oct 06, 2024 3:24 pmOh sorry mate I thought you raced regularSpieker-Loft wrote: ↑Sun Oct 06, 2024 3:00 pmI can't say to much about racing system because next year will be the first year that i personally participate in the races for the old birds. but ill give you a run down of what i atleat plan to do etc

I just googled it Leon
It’s a what I think of as a high carb energy feed
Very similar to my mix which is normally a mix of gerry plus or beyers Gaby / dupurative/ vl energy maybe some diat fed Friday all easy to digest
I can only get VL here or Bamfords a English brand

Do you measure the feed for to appetite for old hens and your ybs
I feed measure morning then increase the night feed each day to fill them Thursday
But I am considering adding 25 per cent barley Monday to Wednesday and feed to appetite each night
