Well. I used to think that for racing you should cross breed again and not in line. But over the past years i seen alot of breeders going total inbreeding even for racingDevo1956 wrote: ↑Thu Oct 10, 2024 2:15 pm Line Breeding is effectively breeding to protect the qualities of one or two exceptional pigeons. Usually blizzard king kittel gets paired up with kittel again and they all do perfect
And after seeing my uncle win 1st and 2nd ace bird in one of the biggest sections in germany with 2 youngsters bred from double grandson x double granddaughter josef so also complete inbreeding. im not to sure anymore if i care that much about cross breeding or in line for racing.
Quality breeding is important for racing pigeons because it helps ensure that the pigeons are healthy, recover quickly from exercise, and have a strong constitution. Pigeons that are frequently sick or require medication are unlikely to become champion racers or stock
It should also be remembered that it will also keep any faults or bad traits in your pigeons. That said it is the practice used by most fanciers.Devo1956 wrote: ↑Thu Oct 10, 2024 2:15 pm Line Breeding is effectively breeding to protect the qualities of one or two exceptional pigeons. Breeding is alot of trial and error anyways imo. We had a hen that hasn't breed any decent winner for several years with different cocks until the last 2 years we found a cock that seem to breed top youngsters with her and she's now given us several 1st with that cock
I bred birds for stock from my best breeders pigeons that had produced 5 fed winners
But I thought about and to get 5 fed winners I must have bred maybe 30-35 from a pigeon so now I moved all them on and only breed from winners from the originals
Otherwise I’m breeding from the unknown so now I don’t bother

I would say it is the same with race horses, hit or miss in breeding a very fine balance. But i would say that is were the art of breeding comes into play.Spieker-Loft wrote: ↑Thu Oct 10, 2024 2:32 pm Breeding is alot of trial and error anyways imo. A very good point Neil, was that your aim when you started in the sport. I have known people who came into the sport, and left the sport a couple of years later. Maybe because of the fact, they did not understand the breeding side of the sport.
