I have been thinking, of how the sport as gone on over the last so many years. In my view racing pigeon flyers have not helped themselves. At club level i have seen members being all about themselves, standing back and not helping in basket duties. It was always the same people, staying behind and waiting for the transporter. I know this because i was one of them waiting for every race we had. I found the sport to be a back stabbing environment to some, I would often wonder why these people are even in the sport. Moaning about this and that, having no real vision on helping the sport move forward,

Like i have said it is all about working together, to take the sport forward. Let us hope it is not too late. It will be good to hear your views on the sport. I would say over the years there have been some really good racing pigeon clubs around the UK. but what has happened to some of them? We know over the years things have become a problem, prices going up on everything to do with the sport. But it is the same for other sports, try buying a cheap football kit, if you do it will be blag.

Whilst I agree with some of the points you make Devo I think there are many other factors.
In the 50+ years I’ve been involved in pigeons it’s always been the same as far as helpers and shuckers are concerned. The only difference now is that there are few members left in the clubs so may be more noticeable. We have a fantastic club where everyone helps out. All take turns in waiting for the transporter which as we are the last pick up in the combine can be gone midnight even though some like me still have a 45 minute drive to get home afterwards. Yes you get the moaners and unsportsmanlike people but never been any different. So I wouldn’t consider this a reason for decline.
Yes things have got more expensive but again still cheep compared to some other sports and probably still the same percentage of a persons income as it has ever been.
I think the main reasons for the decline is the ageing membership with youngsters not wanting to come into the sport. I think that is partly because there are so many other things to entertain them nowadays along with the can’t be bothered to do anything syndrome that many youngsters have nowadays. They are a bone idle lot that don’t want to do a days work and happy to live off benefits.
The other big problem is the fact that modern day houses have very little garden and many councils won’t allow pigeons to be kept. Gone are the days of council houses with large gardens. They just cram as many houses into a small space as is possible. We’ve got 4 housing estates being built around us, a total of over 800 houses, not one of them has a garden bigger enough for a pigeon loft.
Back just enjoying club racing for the time being.
