Just been trying to obtain some limestone flower, no one even heard of it round here.
It seems I can get both hydrated lime and natural hydraulic lime from a local builders merchants.
I assume that the hydrated lime is the stuff not to use but is the natural hydraulic lime ok....?

I think limestone is calcium carbonate as that’s what’s in my bag I have heard of hydrated lime and that’s no good I haven’t heard of the other one

Loads on eBay but £20 due to weight for delivery but I imagine that’s better than the price you was quoted for a tub as the sack is 20kg or maybe 25kg so will last you ages

We used hydrated lime on the cubicles for our dairy cows underneath sawdust. Had to be put on sparingly and with care as it is quite corrosive and will burn the skin but does keep everything extremely dry and kills all bacteria.

I dont think I would be too worried about that Neil, as I always wear a mask in the loft and I like the idea of it killing all bacteria.
However my concern would then be for the birds lungs!!!

Yes it could if you breathed much in. It could also burn the eyes. Dangerous stuff but great against stopping mastitis in cows especially ecoli.

It would be good to use as a base under a deep litter. If the birds were to stand directly onto it it would burn their feet. It’s got quite a strong smell too.

I would rather pay the extra £12-£15 and get the safe stuff sent and not risk my lungs or skin to be honest
best of luck what ever you go for Dave

I agree of course Neil but no-one has mentioned the Hydraulic lime yet?
There's a guy online giving a demo on the use of both and he says that it is calcium carbonate but the demo is for another use.
I have googled several descriptions of hyraulic lime but none come up with a distinctive description. I dont want to rule it out as a possibility when it is available locally.
