Hi Neil

From a continental perspective, one of the most popular and well known pigeons to hit the UK shores has been that of "Pitbull".

A Grizzle cock in colour he won 6 x 1st racing and has since gone on to be a real top superbreeder

It was many moons ago now that I first started selling the line of "Pitbull", and to be honest I never warmed to him straight away

Over the years he's earned my respect more and more because there aint half a load of winners coming through him.

Now, the colour comes from Karel Laenen's great 2004 hen "HET GOED WIT" ("The Good White")

She's responsible for loads and loads and loads of winners this hen Neil - through multiple generations

People fail to see that she's in the breeding of Van Den Builck's superb "Miracle" cock, and he in turn responsible for the 1st National Ace KBDB Champion "KING ARTHUR"

If someone wants to trace back the heritage of "Het Goed Wit" then knock yourself out - go for it

were they sprint pigeons in your area during the 80’s 90’s my memory would be people like Len Clarke winning with the Marcellis reds cheq and mealy or Pauline Arkers with the Busschaert and from memory I don’t recall her having Grizzles but you would know more than me about the area
Are you saying the Belgium’s in the 80’s were winning out of turn with Grizzles and sending us the other colours to buy ? Not sure what you mean Hush
I was all over the place in Belgium in the 1980's Neil, and I've been to most famous lofts you could name

Struggling to think of any time i ever saw a Grizzle though.

That’s my point Mike it’s strange how the odd on here and there has suddenly become 50/60 percent off all the sprint birds sold
Even if it’s fashion to get a few extra quid out of people they still have to have come from somewhere and like you say you can’t think of one from the 80’s on your travels

Even with that being a 2004 bird it’s pretty recent
Not saying they are not great pigeons at all just strange how it’s all come about

Yes, the rise of the Grizzle has certainly been remarkable

Even with "Het Goed Wit" we are 20 years deep there though Neil

I know her parents ring numbers easily enough through Karel Laenen, but it'd take someone (maybe like Lyndon) who'd have a better understanding of the absolute heritage more than me.

Yea

I mean from a UK perspective when I think "Grizzle" I think of the likes of "Stranraer Simon", "Stan the Man" and those kind of pigeons

And they sure as hell weren't sprinters.

Well Neil you are right at the time I was racing, in my first years. I was racing in a club with so many big flyers, and all household names. Sorry when I said hush, what I meant is as soon has I entered the pigeon club the mood changed to no sound just hush. At first I thought I was because of myself, but soon found out you get no information from me. All those little secrets on how you feed, train, and preparation of your birds for racing was kept hush.
Neil at the time Liverpool Amal was sending between 7000 to 8000 birds. So in such a strong Amal with many top flyers, you had to do some research from somewhere, the internet was not around at the time to fact find. It was what you were told and whatever you could read.
The article I put up tells you more about the grizzlies racing in Europe. And I am sure if you look at countries like India, grizzlies would have been around for years. I would say a guy called Les Fizpatric was the grizzled man racing in the club at that time.

Just from that reading.
The public sale after Arie van den Hoek died in 1979 was a big success. Edmond Tournier (son of Jacq who became manager of the loft in 1976) had to pay lots of money to buy 3 of the best birds on this sale: ‘Vechter’, ‘Weerlicht’ and ‘Zijspoor’. A good move because grizzle birds van den Hoek were the top strain in the world on 500-700 km. Tournier bred all-round pigeons. Edmond and Jacq raced from March until October; from 100-1100 km. Let us look to 1958 for instance. Tournier won head prizes in April on Quievrain (130 km) and had super results in May on Corbeil, Toury and St-Denis (300-400 km). He won 1-4-8-9-10-13…on Orleans in June and top prizes on Cahors, Bordeaux, Vannes and Chateauroux.

Totally understand Devo
I saw 45,000 libbed by the unc
I was runner up for a car at 16 years old against 11,000 so I get there was more birds years ago
It’s probably a different subject though
Even with the interesting article I can’t see where the explosion had come from in sprinting Grizzle pigeons not to the extent where the percentage is so high
No one is daft enough to believe Grizzle means they go faster than another colour
Some will many won’t
I guess it’s down to money and in 10 years it will be all reds or blues like any fashion

Yes Neil I have to agree with you, I put it down to selective breeding. which as been proven over the years breeding different colour of winning birds.
