Does malting barley need to be stored different to normal barley ?
Can it turn in hot weather under certain conditions or is that only after the malted stage

Whats the diff between malting and normal barley Neil and what diff does it make to the birds?

It was explained to me it’s to do with fungus moisture and nitrogen

I think malting contains more amino acids due to the quality of the seed ,
Funny enough I posted some farm barley on here not the best looking but it germinated in 4 days the VL I germinated didn’t show for 6-7 days but cost 4 times the price when I asked the farmer he said it would it was saved for seed barley
Then there is a grade for food and a lesser one I guess for animal feed he said
I believe malted barley is malting barley after the germination process then when dried becomes malted but I was told this by a brewer many years ago so could well be wrong
I was with a farmer last week that grows barley mostly but it went out of my head to ask him so will do next Saturday when I am with him again
There’s a interesting you tube video from some years back where Dave Allen interviews staff van reet and goes in detail about his feeding system then Bert hession and Dave Allen explain there system possibly the easiest system to feed sprint pigeons and they mention malted barley but I wasn’t sure if it was malt grade or it had been through the process and then dried ready for making alcohol with
I remember Shane Langton use to always tell me to get it but I never did find it in small quantities at a reasonable price , I was working next to a Malters for some years. and got to know the workers but the managers wouldn’t sell me 2/3 bags so never did try it

Yes your right Neil. Malted barley is barley that has been though steeping (boiled in water), germinating, and drying the barley. Fungus as the farmer I know was telling me only the best gets selected next grade goes to the food chain
As king says all barley can be malted / germinated but brewery industry selects the first quality
The amino acids for pigeons are higher I believe and possibly starch , the quality is better so the grade selected for malting by the big firms would be the best quality
It’s easy to germinate at home to test the quality of germination time

Whats the best way to carry out the germination test Andy - is it to simply float it in water?
I have a bag of farm barley here and was thinking of getting some more but didnt know about this test.

Just soak it 24 hours
Put a small amount in a saucer or something I cover it with a damp piece of kitchen roll
Just check it’s damp each day like it’s paddling if not add a bit of water
3-4 days you should see shoots slow germination is about 6-7
Just leave it in the kitchen or similar
The farmer told me the quicker the better for seed barley in that basic test and seed barley is what he wants to germinate in good time with a high percentage germination
